Microdermabrasion

Microglide™ Microdermabrasion System

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion treatemnt is a non-surgical, non-invasive process that offers safe and controlled skin abrasion. This procedure utilizes micro crystals of a high medical grade, which are propelled at a high speed across the skin’s surface to abrade the skin’s tissue. Debris and used crystals are vacuumed into a sealed waste container, which are then disposed. This technique, also known as “The Lunch-Time Peel” by Vogue and Elle, is performed on an outpatient basis, is very quick, relatively painless and results are seen immediately. There is very limited downtime, side effects, or risk of contamination.

All skin types, as well as the following abnormalities can be treated:
  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Hyperpigmentation (brown spots)
  • Aging skin
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Acne (active and scars)
  • Blemishes
  • Dry skin
  • Oily skin

How does it work?

The stimulated blood flow to the surface of the skin increases the oxygenation causing an enhancement of cell renewal. The messaging action of the Microdermabrasion treatment creates a flushing and cleansing effect below the skin surface resulting in a vibrant healthy Microglide™ appearance and complexion.

Am I an ideal candidate for Microglide™ Microdermabrasion?

The most ideal candidates for Microdermabrasion are those people who are very active and don’t want to take the longer recovery time needed for laser resurfacing or chemical peels. Other ideal candidates are those who are sensitive to chemicals, or who are not responding well to acne medications, or those suffering from melasma (blotches of skin pigmentation).

How many treatments will I need?

You will be given an assessment of the area to be treated and told the estimated number of treatments needed. Treatments are usually performed in six or more sessions with the first three treatments being performed once per week for three weeks straight and the next three treatments in two-week intervals. Treatments typically take 10 – 30 minutes depending upon the area treated. A full-face may take approximately 15 minutes to complete. Maintenance treatments can be done every four to six weeks.

A more aggressive Microdermabrasion treatment can be performed using the same system, but at higher settings for the treatment of: post surgical scars, acne scars and melasma (darkening of the skin). The more aggressive treatments are performed once per week for six weeks straight with the next six plus treatments performed one month later in two-week intervals. Treatments typically take 10 – 30 minutes, but the more aggressive treatments may take as long as an hour or so. Patients should comply with the maintenance program to achieve full results.

Pre-treatment preparation

To receive the full benefit of the Microdermabrasion treatment it is recommended that the area to be treated is clean. All makeup or lotion should be removed prior to treatment. If skin still appears oily, it is recommended you use an astringent or toner.

What should I expect after each treatment?

Results can be noticeable after the first treatment with more noticeable results seen after the third treatment. Skin should appear light pink with a soft Microglide™ texture. More aggressive treatments may leave a redness appearance for approximately 24 hours. Some patients may experience a light peeling after the more aggressive treatments.

Post Treatment instructions

It is recommended that you spray or mist the treated area with cool water immediately after the treatment. It is also recommended that you go without cosmetic makeup and avoid sun for 12 hours after treatment; however, patients may apply their cosmetic makeup after treatment over a non-irritating moisturizer. If activities require you to be in the sun, sunscreen with SPF of at least 30 is recommended. A tropical vitamin A and E ointment may be applied sparingly after treatment to nourish the skin. Normal activities can be resumed immediately.

For 48 hours following treatment it is recommended that you use only a gentle cleanser and moisturizer on the face. Any lotions containing alpha hydroxyl, or vitamin C should be avoided.
